Live Life

From Dead to Alive:

Have you ever wondered about your spiritual journey - where you came from and where you're headed? Understanding our past is crucial for moving forward in faith. Just like army Rangers use landmarks and terrain to navigate, we need to understand our spiritual bearings to know where God is leading us.

What Does It Mean to Be Dead in Sin?

Paul paints a vivid picture in Ephesians 2:1-3 of our condition before Christ. We were "dead in trespasses and sins" - not just spiritually sick, but spiritually dead. This wasn't a minor ailment that needed treatment; it was a terminal condition.

Imagine being born with a cancerous respiratory illness in a polluted environment. You're fighting for every breath, competing with others who are equally desperate. Not only were you born with this condition, but you were also contributing to the toxic environment around you. This illustrates our spiritual state before salvation.

Living Under the Prince of the Air

We weren't just victims of circumstance. Paul explains that we walked "according to the prince of the power of the air." We were under the influence of an evil ruler, acting in accordance with his corrupt nature. We were children of wrath, deserving judgment just like everyone else.

But God - The Game Changer

The most powerful two words in Scripture might be "But God" (Ephesians 2:4). When we were running out of time, when death was certain, eternity stepped in. God didn't wait for us to clean up our act or prove our worth. While we were still dead in our sins, He made us alive.

Why Did God Save Us?

God's motivation wasn't our goodness - we had none. He saved us because of:

  • His rich mercy

  • His great love

  • His desire to show His grace to future generations

We are trophies of His grace, living displays of what God can do with dead people. This salvation came not through our works but as a gift, "lest anyone should boast."

What Does It Mean to Be Made Alive?

When God breathed spiritual life into us, everything changed. We went from being victims of time to being seated with Christ in heavenly places. The ticking time bomb of death has been disarmed. We're no longer just surviving - we're thriving in the rarefied air of heaven.

We Are His Workmanship

God didn't save us to sit on a shelf as decorative trophies. We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that He prepared beforehand. We have a purpose, a calling, a reason for being here beyond just avoiding hell.

How Were We Brought Near to God?

As Gentiles, we were once separated from God's covenant people. There was a "middle wall of separation" between us and the promises of God. We were strangers, foreigners, without hope and without God in the world.

But Christ broke down that wall. Through His blood, He brought us near. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles, creating "one new man" from both groups. Now we have access to the Father through one Spirit.

Understanding Our Connection to Israel

Our salvation didn't happen in a vacuum. God revealed His plan through Israel, His chosen people. They were the mechanism through which the Messiah came. We've been grafted into the vine, brought into the family that God has been building throughout history.

What Are We Now?

Paul concludes this section by telling us what we've become. We are no longer strangers and foreigners. Instead, we are:

  • Fellow citizens with the saints

  • Members of God's household

  • Living stones in God's temple

  • A dwelling place for God in the Spirit

Built Together as One Temple

We're not lone rangers in our faith. We're living stones being built together into a holy temple. Christ is the chief cornerstone, and the apostles and prophets form the foundation. Each of us has a place in this spiritual building.

This means unity matters. While we may disagree on non-essential issues, we must major on the majors and minor on the minors. There's one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God over all.

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to live as someone who truly understands where you came from and where you're going. Remember that you were once dead in sin, but God made you alive for a purpose. You're not just marking time - you're part of God's eternal plan to display His grace to the world.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I remember where I came from spiritually, or have I started to think I deserve God's blessings?

  • Am I living as a trophy of God's grace, showing others what He can do with a dead person?

  • How am I contributing to the unity of God's temple, or am I building unnecessary walls with other believers?

  • What good works has God prepared for me to walk in, and am I stepping into them?

Your story is woven into His story. Others who come after you need to hear how God brought you from death to life. Don't waste the privilege you've been given - use it to point others to the God who specializes in making dead people alive.
